Amalfi Sails

3.7 min read

Snorkeling on the Amalfi Coast is one of the most rewarding activities you can do in this part of Italy: clear waters, rocky seabeds rich in marine life, and coves reachable only by sea that seem to belong to another era.

The challenge? The most beautiful beaches for swimming and snorkeling on the Amalfi Coast are not accessible on foot. You either venture out on a private boat or join an organised tour with a skipper. In this guide you’ll find everything you need to know.

The characteristics of the sea on the Amalfi Coast

The stretch of sea between Minori and Positano is part of the Gulf of Salerno, a marine area characterised by relatively warm waters in summer (24–26°C in July and August), good underwater visibility and predominantly rocky seabeds with meadows of Posidonia oceanica — the marine plant that symbolises a healthy Mediterranean.

Posidonia isn’t just beautiful to look at: it indicates that the ecosystem is functioning well. Posidonia seabeds are home to significant biodiversity: groupers, sea bream, octopus, crabs, starfish and — if you’re lucky — the occasional moray eel tucked among the rocks.

Where to snorkel on the Amalfi Coast: the best spots

The Furore Fjord The Furore Fjord is probably the most spectacular snorkeling location between Amalfi and Positano. The narrow natural inlet between rock walls creates a current-free environment with crystal-clear water and a shallow seabed. It’s the perfect spot for first-timers with mask and snorkel: calm waters, excellent visibility, rocks to explore just below the surface.

The coves of Praiano Praiano is the stretch of Coast least affected by mass tourism. Its small beaches — some reachable only by sea — have clean rocky and algae-covered seabeds. The skipper knows where to stop: typically small semi-hidden bays where other boats are rarely found.

The waters of Positano Near Positano, away from the main beach and ferry boats, there are open-water areas with interesting seabeds. Depth increases more rapidly than at previous spots: better suited to confident swimmers who want to explore less shallow zones.

How to reach the snorkeling coves: boat is the only option

Almost all the most interesting snorkeling coves on the Amalfi Coast are not accessible by land. They are natural inlets at the foot of the cliffs, accessible only from the sea. This makes them rare, unspoilt and far less frequented than the main beaches.

There are two options: rent a private boat (expensive, requires sailing experience or a skippered charter) or join an organised boat tour. The Amalfi Sails tour includes snorkeling stops as an integral part of the experience, with equipment provided on board.

What to do on board: snorkeling included in the price

The Amalfi Sails boat tour from Minori to Positano includes multiple swimming and snorkeling stops throughout the 4-hour excursion. Equipment — mask, snorkel and fins — is included in the tour price. The skipper chooses the stopping points based on conditions on the day: no rigid itinerary, just following the coast.

On board you’ll also find a freshwater shower for rinsing off after swimming, sun deck areas with cushions and a bathroom. You can snorkel, come back on board, relax, and return to the water. No rush.

What to bring for snorkeling on the Amalfi Coast

  • Swimsuit (of course)
  • 3mm wetsuit — recommended in spring and autumn when water is below 20°C
  • Your own mask and snorkel — if you have them and are used to them, your own equipment is best
  • Waterproof sunscreen — to be applied before boarding
  • Beach towel — not included in the tour
  • Sunglasses with strap — essential on the boat
  • Best period for snorkeling on the Amalfi Coast

The ideal period runs from May to September. In June, July and August the water is warmer and underwater visibility is excellent. In May and September the sea is less crowded, the water is cooler but often clearer. In winter the sea is rough and temperatures are low: snorkeling is not recommended.
